Difference Between Semester and Quarter System

Schools on the semester system have two terms per year, not including summer or winter sessions. The fall and spring semesters are each 16 to 18 weeks in length.

Schools on the quarter system have three terms per year, not including summer sessions. The fall, winter, and spring quarters are between 10 and 12 weeks in length.
